When you start with a casino-themed evening and end up with 50 Christmas hampers, it’s definitely a win-win.

At Mulberry PARC – a PARC Retirement Living residence – that was the order of the day recently when the residence hosted a Monte Carlo event to raise funds for seniors in need within the Burnaby community.

The tradition has been underway annually since 2008.

Family and friends came out to gamble and bet, with all proceeds going towards the making of Christmas hampers for seniors in need. This year, over $4,000 was raised during the event!

“It is truly wonderful to give deserving seniors these big, beautiful, bulging baskets. They will brighten many lives and it’s a delightful way for all of us to share the Christmas spirit,” says Margaret Hansen of New Vista Society, the organization who distributed some of the baskets.

35 baskets went to those who are challenged with income, health, family support, or have undergone tragedies, while 15 went to the Edmonds Community Centre. They distribute the baskets to the neediest seniors in the community.

The baskets are jam-packed with goodies:  $50 gift certificates for Save-On-Foods, crackers, tea, scarves, toothpaste, toothbrush, hot chocolate, pasta and pasta sauce, cookies, fruit cake, soup, chocolate and more. Even hand-knitted items from Mulberry PARC’s resident knitting club are included.

For the recipients, it is a much-appreciated gift and yet many of them ‘pay it forward’ by sharing their treasures with other friends in need.

This Christmas tradition at Mulberry PARC brings joy and Christmas spirit to everyone who takes part, whether they’re giving or receiving.

Will it continue for many more years to come? I’m willing to bet on it.
